My Focus For The Week

President Monson in General Conference, October, 1980, said, "The goal of gospel teaching...is not to 'pour information' into the minds of class members.....The aim is to inspire the individual to think about, feel about, and then do something about living gospel principles".

I agree. When I teach, I try to ask questions to get people to move beyond our normal "sunday school" answers that we give and take all of our lives and actually think about what things mean to each of us.

a good thought that actually applies to all kinds of teaching. i would much rather my writing students learn how to think for themselves than have them walk away from my class with a bunch of practically insignificant information.

Yes, don't you just hate to get the knee jerk responses to the questions you ask when teaching? Half the time, when I ask exactly what they mean by these answers, they are stuck, and the intent has totally passed them by, and in H.P. for 50 to 70 years!
Also, enspiring 70 year olds to view things differently and to do something about it is easier said than done. Maybe, if they get new information, or see it in a way they haven't before, you at least have a start.

excellent point, hen. it's one of the reasons that the lessons year in and year out are all pretty similar - we still haven't gotten everything we need out of them yet.
